SOB: Brandi Carlile - Wherever is Your Heart
School can sometimes suck. For my last semester in Photographic Technology at NAIT we needed to pick a photographer to learn from for 80 whole hours. Now, if you're an introvert like me, you know how much this sucks. It not only sucks doing 80 hours of extra "homework", but also the struggle you go through trying to find a photographer to take you. Nobody wants you around for 80 hours. Go home. Especially not a stranger. For those of you that read my latest blog post, skip ahead, or don't, if you want to listen to my ramblings.
Last year we were required to do a 1 day work experience. After having difficulties finding someone to go with, my prof Shaun Scade at Scade photography, suggested I go with Blake Loates. Blake was absolutely hilarious and I had a great day with her at the studio. The best part through, was that I got to meet Michel.
If you have never met Michel before, there are a few things you should know. Number one: she will make you do the chicken dance in front of real life clients. Number two: she drinks beer in the shower (not before the shower, not after the shower, but actually INSIDE the shower), number three: she HATES blue pen, and lastly, she is one of the best people you will ever meet.
Over the course of our two weeks together I learned an insane amount. How to pick up dog poop, how to fix your contact page on your website (after you may, or may not have lost a few clients.. but hey let's just write it on the Facebook wall), I learned that you should never let your dog on your couch after not paying attention to him for a long period of time, and how it's humanly possible to live off of juice for three days. I filled up pages and pages in my journal of everything Michel had to teach me.
I'm fairly certain that after me, Michel will never want another NAIT student again. (Although she says it's because i'm too "awesome" to beat). I think it's because I probably gave her nightmares about 6400 ISO and "wedding location portraits".
You know, before I spent these past two weeks with Michel, If any future NAIT student out there was reading my blog and looking for a work experience photographer, I would have recommended Michel. But now, I don't think I would have. Not because she was super quick to respond to my otherwise smart remarks, or because she was equally as stubborn as I am, or even because she came up with even cooler ideas then I did, but because she was amazing. Michel is larger than life, with a side of crazy. (Plus, I already called dibbs and she's my second mom now so all you NAIT students can beat it.)
So, thanks Michel, for taking me into your crazy life and cramming my brain with everything you know in the short 2 weeks we had. Thanks for being totally hilarious and always having a crazy story. Thanks for saying "THIS IS MY JAM" to every song that came on. Thanks for for pushing me out of my comfort zone. Thanks for not only giving me advice about photography, but also about life. Thanks for being you.
Have a great Monday,
Abby
